Mike Heiligenstein Says “Maybe” To Driverless Technology

Driverless technology is becoming an increasingly popular and efficient way for people to travel. However, there isn’t much use of it right now in the Austin area. That could change, however, as Mike Heilgenstein and the Mobility Authority discussed the possibility of integrating it into the Austin county area.

Who Is Mike Heiligenstein?
Mr. Heiligenstein is a transportation expert who has worked in the Central Texas area for years. He is currently the Executive Director of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority.

This group was created to handle transportation problems plaguing the area. They work to create infrastructure methods that streamline the way people travel through the area.

For example, with their help the area was the first in the country to transition to an entirely electronic toll system that allowed for cash-free payment. They have also helped open toll roads and various express lanes that have made transportation in this very populated area easier than ever.

Mr. Heiligenstein currently works as President of the International Bridge, Tunnel, and Turnpike Association as well. These years of expertise have made him one of the most important and respected traffic specialists in Texas.

What Did They Discuss?
During this growth summit in Austin, they discussed how they were going to solve some of the traffic challenges still hammering the suburban area. For example, the concept of driverless vehicles was very heavily debated.

Many on the committee were very excited by the possibilities that it offered, but were uncertain if the area was prepared for it. Even concepts as intriguing as ride sharing apps like Uber were discussed as a potential solution.

Mr. Heilgenstein was particularly positive about driverless vehicles and even ride sharing apps, but was concerned about the including infrastructure that existed in the area. He said: “Williamson has done such an amazing job of structuring its infrastructure over the past 15 years or so. But you are still going to have more people coming here.

“Try building those roads. Try expanding those capacities. It’s getting to a point where, the corridors we have remaining, we need to make them smarter, more efficient and more technically advanced.”

Final Thoughts
Mr. Heilgenstein raises some very good points about driverless technology. Is it wise to invest in it just yet when there’s so many infrastructure needs that must be discussed? It’s hard to say, but it’s likely that driverless technology, while not coming to the area in the next few years, could come to the area at some point.

OSI Group was recently presented with the Globe of Honor award (2016) by the British Safety Council. The award was in recognizance of the exemplary management it had taken on environmental risks. This happened during the awards luncheon held on November 25, 2016 at the Draper’s Hall, London. OSI Group was among the 18 organizations in the world that were feted with the prestigious award. All these organizations had shown their excellence in the area of environmental management.

Qualifying for the award

For an organization to compete for this award, it must get a maximum of five stars from the British Safety Council when it conducts an audit scheme on its environmental management. In this case the audit scheme took place between August 2015 and July 2016. On top of that, the organization had to demonstrate their excellent environmental management to an autonomous panel of specialists. The environmental management should be portrayed throughout the business from its first floor up to the boardroom. Lynda Armstrong OBE, the chairperson of British Safety Council congratulated OSI Food for scooping the award and was pleased that a large number of organizations managed to win the award.

OSI Group Purchase Flagship Europe

In late December of 2016, an announcement was made by the Flagship Food Group stating that it had accepted an offer from OSI Group for its Flagship Europe. The OSI Group is based in the United States and is involved in the food manufacturing industry with several facilities in America, Asia and Europe. Flagship Europe on the other hand deals with food service products in the UK and this includes sous vide equipment, frozen poultry, Oliver James pies as well as dressings, sauces and mayonnaise. Russell Maddock, the chief executive of Flagship Executive, stated that the acquisition would present a great opportunity for the brand as it would access new global markets and clients being part of the OSI Group.

OSI Group acquires Tyson Foods plant for $ 7.4 million

Earlier in June 2016, OSI Group acquired a Chicago-based food plant that was formerly owned by Tyson Foods. Tyson Foods had earlier indicated that about 480 persons would lose their jobs due to an imminent shutdown. Caroline Ahn, a spokeswoman for Tyson Foods, stated that on the last day of production, the plant had about 250 employees and most of them were offered jobs by the OSI Group. Alison Kovaleski, an OSI spokeswoman did not shed light on the number of employees in the plant and the Group’s future plans for it. OSI Group indicated on its website that the plant would provide a much needed infrastructure to meet customer demands.

Thor Halvorssen: The Humanitarian and the FIlm Producer

Thor Leonardo Halvorssen is a human activist that also doubles as a film producer. He is the President of the Human Rights Foundation whose aim is to protect and champion for human rights. The organization was founded in 2005. He is also the founder of Oslo Freedom Forum which hold annual global conferences where worldwide humanitarians converge and discuss on how to push on human rights.

Leonardo Halsorssen was born on March 9, 1976 in Venezuela. He is related to Cristobal Mendoza who was the first president of Venezuela. He enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated with concurrent degrees in History and Political Science.

The calling to fight for human rights started at an early age. When Halvorssen was in university, he once led a protest demanding the release of his father who had been arrested on allegations of money laundering when he was working as an undercover detective. Halvorssen protests proved to be successful as his father was cleared of all allegations against him.

In 1999, Halvorssen led a campaign against a Chinese Company Lucent Technologies after there were claims that the company used slave labor to reduce its cost of production. The Chinese company had been accused of holding up to 8 million people across its 1100 operational facilities against their will. Some of them were underage children.

Thor Halvorssen has contributed columns to many dailies. One famous example was an article that he wrote for The Wall Street Journal after his mother had been shot at by police while she was taking part in a demonstration back in their home country. It was after his mother’s shooting that Halvorssen got inspired to start the Human Rights Foundation to try and prevent such human rights abuse from happening again.

Away from activism, Halvorssen has been involved in the production of several films. Some of the films include: The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Freedom’s Fury, Hammer & Tickle, etc. Halvorssen is also involved in children’s charity where he acts as the patron of On Own Feet, a children’s peace movement.
